Joanna Merrick has always been responsible—she has never thrown caution to the wind because she has no caution to throw—and she thought she was particularly content with her experiences, up until she wasn’t. Now she isn’t much sure of what she should do with all of the responsible decisions she’s accrued. So far, she’s resented them and the bland life they’ve provided her by engaging her interests in the bottom of red wine bottles and packs of light cigarettes. Her job as a professor of criminal justice at Austin State University, the forgotten “other” college in the Lone Star state’s liberal enclave of Austin, has furthered her list of dull achievements in responsibility; that is, until Lukas Amsel takes a seat in the back row of her lecture hall. With his late arrival, the German-bred soccer standout effectively ends her rapidly increasing record of responsible accomplishments by reminding her of the one irresponsible decision she’s ever made.
